What Is An SP30 Conviction?

How To Compare SP30 Car Insurance With SimplyQuote

Three steps, around 10 minutes. You will need your licence number, vehicle registration, and the date of your SP30 conviction.

Enter your details

Fill in one form with your driver and vehicle details, including the SP30 date, number of points, and any other convictions. The form is built for convicted driver applications, so the questions match what specialist insurers need to quote.

Compare specialist quotes

Your details are sent to our panel of specialist car insurance companies. Each insurer returns a price based on their own underwriting rules. You will typically see quotes from multiple insurers within minutes.

Choose the right cover

Compare prices, excess levels, payment options, and policy extras side by side. Buy online or speak to the broker for help. No obligation to take any quote.

How Much Does SP30 Car Insurance Cost?

A single SP30 with 3 penalty points typically adds 5 to 15% to your premium. A more serious offence carrying 6 points can push the increase to 20 to 30%. On an average UK premium of around £900, that means an extra £45 to £270 per year.

SP30 is one of the lightest conviction loadings on insurer rating tables. Insurers treat it as a lower risk than drink driving (DR10) or driving without insurance (IN10) because it is a speed offence rather than a behavioural or compliance issue. However, multiple SP30s compound quickly and can trigger refusal from mainstream providers.

How does the premium change as the conviction ages?

Years since offence Typical premium loading Declaration required?
Year 1 5 to 30% above standard rate Yes
Year 2 5 to 20% above standard Yes
Year 3 Minimal to 10% above standard Yes
Year 4 (points removed) Near-standard rate Yes (until spent)
Year 5+ (spent) Standard rate No

The endorsement stays on your licence for 4 years from the offence date. Under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, the conviction becomes spent after 5 years. After that, you no longer need to declare it unless your insurer specifically asks about all convictions.

How To Reduce SP30 Car Insurance Costs

Six practical steps can reduce the impact of an SP30 on your premium. Most apply immediately and compound as the conviction ages.

Compare at every renewal

Your SP30 loading should reduce each year, but your insurer may not pass that saving on automatically. Do not auto-renew without checking what the market offers. The gap between the cheapest and most expensive quote for an SP30 driver can be several hundred pounds.

Fit a telematics device

A black box insurance policy gives your insurer hard evidence that the speeding was a one-off. Telematics typically cuts 15 to 30% off the price for drivers who can demonstrate consistently safe driving behaviour.

Choose a lower insurance group car

A lower group car costs less to insure, and the saving matters more when a conviction is loading your premium. Check which insurance groups are cheapest before buying your next car.

Increase your voluntary excess

Raising your voluntary excess from £100 to £500 can reduce the premium by 10 to 20%. Make sure you can afford it if you need to claim.

Protect your no-claims discount

An SP30 does not reset your no-claims discount. Only a fault claim does. A long claims-free record offsets much of the SP30 loading, so protecting it is worth the small extra cost.

Pay annually if you can

Monthly payments include interest charges that can add 15 to 30% to the total cost. On a conviction-loaded premium, paying upfront saves more in absolute terms than on a standard policy.

What Are The Penalties For Speeding In The UK?

The penalty depends on how far over the limit you were driving. The gov.uk speeding penalties page sets out the sentencing guidelines.

Speed band Example (30mph zone) Fine Points
Band A (minor) 31 to 40mph 25 to 75% of weekly income 3
Band B (moderate) 41 to 50mph 75 to 125% of weekly income 4 to 6 or 7-28 day ban
Band C (serious) 51mph+ 125 to 175% of weekly income 6 or 7-56 day ban

The minimum fine is £100. The maximum fine on a public road is £1,000, rising to £2,500 on a motorway. Courts can also impose a discretionary driving ban for serious or repeated offences.

Can You Take A Speed Awareness Course Instead?

Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria. The National Speed Awareness Course avoids penalty points and is offered when your speed falls within a specific threshold above the limit.

The course is typically offered when you were driving between 10% plus 2mph and 10% plus 9mph over the limit. For a 30mph zone, that means 35 to 42mph. Above that threshold, you receive a fixed penalty notice or a court summons instead.

The course costs around £100, lasts approximately 4 hours, and can only be taken once every 3 years for the same type of offence. You must still declare the course to your insurer if asked, but the insurance impact is usually less than penalty points because no endorsement appears on your licence.

Do You Have To Declare An SP30 To Your Insurer?

Yes, while the conviction is unspent. The endorsement stays on your licence for 4 years, but most insurers ask about convictions for the last 5 years. After 5 years the conviction is spent and no longer needs to be disclosed.

Failing to declare an unspent SP30 is treated as non-disclosure. Your insurer can void your policy, refuse any claims, and record a cancellation against your name. A voided policy makes future insurance far harder to find and more expensive.

How do you check your driving record?

You can view your driving record online at gov.uk. You will need your driving licence number, National Insurance number, and postcode. Your record shows the offence date, the number of points, and when the SP30 will be removed.

What Happens If You Have Multiple Speeding Convictions?

Each additional SP30 compounds the premium loading and moves you closer to the 12-point totting-up threshold. If you accumulate 12 or more points within 3 years, you face an automatic 6-month driving ban.

Two SP30 convictions with 3 points each (6 points total) will typically increase your premium by 20 to 40%. Three or more convictions may push you out of mainstream insurance entirely and into specialist convicted driver providers.

New drivers who have held a full licence for less than 2 years face automatic licence revocation at just 6 points under the Road Traffic (New Drivers) Act 1995. If you are a young driver with a recent SP30, a single further offence could mean losing your licence and having to retake your test.

What Are The Other Speeding Conviction Codes?

The SP30 sits within a family of speeding endorsement codes. Each code covers a different type of speed offence. The full list of all driving offence codes is available in our guide.

Code Offence Points
SP10 Exceeding goods vehicle speed limits 3 to 6
SP20 Exceeding speed limit for type of vehicle 3 to 6
SP30 Exceeding statutory speed limit on a public road 3 to 6
SP40 Exceeding passenger vehicle speed limit 3 to 6
SP50 Exceeding speed limit on a motorway 3 to 6

Insurers treat all SP codes similarly for underwriting purposes. If you have any speeding conviction, the comparison and cost-reduction advice on this page applies. For other types of motoring conviction, see our main convicted driver insurance page.

What Does SP30 Car Insurance Cover?

SP30 policies offer the same three levels of cover as standard car insurance: third-party only, third-party fire and theft, and fully comprehensive. The difference is the premium loading, not the cover itself.

With an SP30, comprehensive cover can sometimes cost less than third-party only. This happens because third-party-only policies attract higher-risk drivers, and insurers price accordingly. Always compare all three levels before choosing.

How Does An SP30 Compare To Other Convictions?

An SP30 is treated as one of the least severe motoring convictions by insurers. It carries a significantly lower premium loading than drink driving or driving without insurance.

Factor SP30 (speeding) IN10 (no insurance) DR10 (drink driving)
Penalty points 3 to 6 6 to 8 3 to 11
Driving ban Rare (discretionary) Only if 12+ points Minimum 12 months
Criminal record No No Yes
Time on licence 4 years 4 years 11 years
Declaration period 5 years 5 years 5 years
Typical year 1 loading 5 to 30% 40 to 80% 100 to 200%

If you have a DR10 drink driving conviction or an IN10 no-insurance conviction alongside an SP30, the more serious conviction will be the dominant factor in your premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an SP30 always increase my insurance?

In most cases, yes. A single SP30 with 3 points typically adds 5 to 15% to your premium. Some insurers load more heavily than others, which is why comparing across multiple providers matters.

How long does an SP30 stay on my licence?

Four years from the date of the offence. However, most insurers ask about convictions for the last 5 years, so you will need to declare it for a year after the points are removed.

Is a speed awareness course better than taking points?

Usually, yes. A course avoids points on your licence, which most insurers view more favourably. You must still declare the course if your insurer asks about it, but the premium impact is generally lower than an SP30 endorsement.

Will an SP30 show on a DBS check?

No. An SP30 is a motoring offence, not a criminal offence. It appears on your DVLA driving record but not on a criminal record or standard DBS check.

Can I lose my licence from a single SP30?

It is unlikely from a single offence with 3 points. However, if you were driving at a very high speed (Band C), the court can impose a discretionary driving ban. New drivers who have held a full licence for less than 2 years face automatic revocation at 6 points.

What if I already have points from another offence?

Points from different offences are added together. If your total reaches 12 points within 3 years, you face an automatic 6-month totting-up ban. After a totting-up ban, finding insurance becomes significantly harder and more expensive.

Does an SP30 affect my no-claims discount?

No. A conviction alone does not reset your no-claims discount. Only a fault claim does. You keep your full bonus even with an SP30 on your licence.

What is the difference between SP30 and SP50?

SP30 covers speeding on a public road (any road that is not a motorway). SP50 covers speeding on a motorway. Both carry 3 to 6 points and are treated similarly by insurers. See our full guide to driving offence codes for all conviction code definitions.
