Why Compare Car Insurance Companies?

How To Compare Car Insurance Companies

The quickest way is to use a comparison tool that checks multiple insurers at once.

You can compares over 130 UK car insurance companies in a single search, so you see prices from specialist and mainstream insurers side by side.

Enter your details

You will need your car registration (or make and model), driving licence details, estimated annual mileage, and claims history from the last five years.

Compare on more than just price

Quotes are returned sorted by price, but the cheapest is not always the best value. Check the difference between third party and comprehensive cover, and look at what extras like breakdown cover and a courtesy car cost.

Pay attention to the excess. A low premium with a £500 compulsory excess could cost you more in a claim than a slightly pricier policy with £250 excess.

Check the insurer, not just the price

Trustpilot ratings and FCA complaints data both give insight into how an insurer handles claims and customer service. Financial strength ratings tell you how likely they are to pay out when it matters.

Some companies sell only direct and are not on comparison sites, so checking insurers not on comparison sites separately can uncover deals you would otherwise miss. You can verify any insurer is properly regulated by searching the FCA Financial Services Register.

Buy online

Once you find the right policy, you can buy directly online through the comparison tool. Before you buy, confirm the cover level matches your needs and read any exclusions.

Who Are The Best Car Insurance Companies In The UK?

Young drivers Hastings Direct Essentials policy designed for budget-conscious new drivers
Convicted drivers Swinton Specialist underwriting for drivers with convictions
Black box cover Churchill Telematics policy that rewards safe driving habits

These picks are based on Quotezone comparison data, Trustpilot ratings, and Defaqto policy scores as of April 2026. Your best option will depend on your age, car, location, and driving history.

Top 10 Car Insurance Companies Reviewed

Below is an overview of each of the UK’s ten largest car insurers, covering what they offer, who they suit, and how customers rate them.

Admiral Group

Admiral is the UK’s largest car insurer with around 5.7 million vehicles covered through Admiral, Bell, Diamond, and Elephant. Their multi-car insurance product covers up to five vehicles at the same address at a discount.

They scored 4.5 out of 5 on Trustpilot and won Best Motor Insurance Provider at the 2024 Personal Finance Awards. Younger drivers can explore young driver insurance through their Littlebox telematics product.

Direct Line Group

Direct Line Group is the second largest motor insurer and sells through Direct Line, Churchill, Darwin, and Privilege. Direct Line historically sold only direct, but in late 2024 they launched on Compare the Market for the first time.

Churchill is often among the cheapest on comparison sites, particularly their Essentials product. Their black box insurance product is rated highly for telematics cover, and the group also owns By Miles for pay-per-mile policies.

Aviva

Aviva is the third largest motor insurer and the UK’s largest general insurer overall. They sell five tiers from Zero Essentials to Platinum, and their Quotemehappy brand on comparison sites is often among the cheapest available.

Aviva is the sole Which? Recommended Provider for car insurance in 2026, scoring 81% for customer satisfaction. They also offer specialist electric car insurance covering battery damage and charging equipment.

LV=

LV= (Liverpool Victoria) is the fourth largest motor insurer and scores among the highest for customer satisfaction, with a 4.5 out of 5 Trustpilot rating.

Their fully comprehensive cover includes an uninsured driver promise (no excess and no NCD loss) and misfuelling cover as standard. Read more about how your no-claims bonus works with different insurers.

Hastings Direct

Hastings Direct is the fifth largest motor insurer with 3.9 million policies in force, offering three tiers (Essentials, Direct, and Premier) plus YouDrive telematics cover.

Hastings Essentials is one of the cheapest policies on the market, though windscreen cover is not included and cannot be added. They scored 4.4 out of 5 on Trustpilot.

Ageas

Ageas is the sixth largest motor insurer and recently expanded by acquiring esure (including Sheila’s Wheels) and taking over Saga’s underwriting business.

AXA

AXA is a large international insurer that sells under their own brand, MOJA, and Swiftcover. They have been particularly competitive on price in recent comparison site tests.

NFU Mutual

NFU Mutual is the only policyholder-owned (mutual) company in the top 10, meaning profits go towards reducing premiums for members rather than paying shareholders. They are a popular choice for classic car insurance and vehicles in rural areas.

esure

esure sells under the esure and Sheila’s Wheels brands, both now part of the Ageas group following the 2024 acquisition. They are widely available on comparison sites.

First Central

First Central is the tenth largest motor insurer and sells primarily through comparison sites with Core, Extra, Premier, Connect, and Value tiers.

How Much Does Car Insurance Cost By Company?

Car insurance prices vary between companies, even for identical drivers and vehicles. The average UK premium is around £496 per year, but your quote could be much higher or lower.

A driver who gets a £300 quote from one company might be quoted £900 by another for identical cover. Read more about how car insurance is calculated.

According to ABI data, the average private motor insurance premium was £496 in Q4 2025, down 10.2% from £559 in Q4 2024. Premiums had been rising through 2023 and 2024 but have since stabilised.

Tip

Young drivers pay the most, and our guide to how much young driver insurance costs breaks down what under-25s can expect. You can also reduce your premium by choosing a car in a lower insurance group.

Which Car Insurance Companies Are The Most Trusted?

Customer trust can be measured through Trustpilot ratings, Defaqto policy scores, and official complaints data from the FCA and Financial Ombudsman Service.

Trustpilot ratings

Rank Company Trustpilot rating
1 Allianz 4.5 / 5
2 Admiral 4.5 / 5
3 LV= 4.5 / 5
4 AXA 4.4 / 5
5 Hastings Direct 4.4 / 5
6 Aviva 4.3 / 5
7 Direct Line 4.2 / 5
8 NFU Mutual 4.1 / 5
9 Saga 3.9 / 5
10 Churchill 3.9 / 5

Complaints data

The Financial Conduct Authority publishes complaints data for every regulated insurer, and looking at complaints per 1,000 policies gives a fairer comparison than raw numbers.

Company FCA complaints per 1,000 policies (H2 2024)
Allianz 0.59
Ageas 1.14
LV= 2.28
Aviva 2.91
NFU Mutual 3.14
esure 3.90
Admiral 4.40
Direct Line 5.97
AXA 6.99
Hastings 7.15

A higher complaint rate does not always mean worse service, as companies with cheaper policies tend to attract higher claim volumes. Data is from the Financial Ombudsman Service and FCA H2 2024 reporting period.

How Financially Strong Are UK Insurers?

Financial strength ratings from Moody’s, S&P, and Fitch indicate how likely an insurer is to pay claims. All major UK car insurers hold strong ratings.

Company Moody’s S&P Fitch
Admiral — — A
Allianz (parent of LV=) Aa2 AA A+
Aviva Aa3 AA− AA−
AXA Aa3 — A+
Direct Line Group A2 — —
Hastings (Sampo) A2 — A
NFU Mutual — — —

An AA or A rating means the insurer has very strong capacity to meet its obligations, and even the lowest rated company here (A2) is considered upper-medium grade.

Smaller insurers may not carry ratings from these agencies, making it harder to assess their stability. Ratings are sourced from insurer websites and filings as of April 2026.

Which Car Insurance Companies Hold The Largest Market Share?

Admiral Group is the largest car insurance company in the UK with around 14% of the market. The top 10 insurers account for roughly 70% of all motor insurance premiums written.

Rank Company Market share Gross premiums written
1 Admiral Group 14.0% £3,350m
2 Direct Line Group 13.3% £2,920m
3 Aviva 13.1% £2,884m
4 LV= 10.0% £2,205m
5 Hastings 7.8% £1,724m
6 Ageas 5.6% £1,240m
7 AXA 5.1% £1,124m
8 NFU Mutual 4.0% £873m
9 esure 3.9% £861m
10 First Central 3.6% £786m

Figures are based on SFCR regulatory filings for the 2024 reporting year, calculated from gross written premiums for motor vehicle liability and other motor insurance.

Many of these companies sell under multiple brand names. Admiral includes Bell, Diamond, and Elephant, while Direct Line Group includes Churchill, Darwin, and Privilege.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the biggest car insurance company in the UK?

Admiral Group is the largest car insurance company in the UK by market share (around 14%), covering approximately 5.7 million vehicles through its brands including Admiral, Bell, Diamond, and Elephant.

Which car insurance company is cheapest?

There is no single cheapest company because insurers price risk differently based on your age, car, postcode, and driving history. A company that is cheapest for one driver may be expensive for another, which is why comparing quotes is the most reliable way to find the lowest price.

How many car insurance companies are there in the UK?

There are over 1,000 companies selling car insurance in the UK, but the 10 largest account for roughly 70% of all motor insurance premiums. SimplyQuote compares over 130 of them in one search.

Are smaller insurance companies safe to use?

All car insurance companies in the UK must be authorised by the FCA, but smaller companies may not carry financial strength ratings from agencies like Moody’s or S&P. If financial security is a concern, choosing a rated insurer provides extra confidence.

What is a mutual insurance company?

A mutual insurer is owned by its policyholders rather than shareholders, and NFU Mutual is the only mutual in the UK’s top 10 car insurers. Profits go towards reducing premiums for members rather than paying dividends.

How do I check if a car insurance company is legitimate?

Search for the company on the FCA Financial Services Register, where every legitimate insurer and broker in the UK must be listed. If a company does not appear on the register, do not buy a policy from them.

Can I get car insurance from a company not on comparison sites?

Yes, some insurers sell only direct and are not available on any comparison site, though Direct Line was the most notable example until late 2024 when they launched on Compare the Market. Checking direct websites alongside comparison results ensures you see the full market.

What is the difference between an insurer and a broker?

An insurer underwrites your policy and pays claims, while a broker arranges the policy on your behalf without carrying the risk. Some brands on comparison sites are brokers that place your policy with an underwriter, but both must be FCA authorised.

Does it matter which car insurance company I choose?

Yes, companies differ in what they include as standard, how they handle claims, and how quickly they pay out. A policy with a lower premium but higher excess could cost you more in a claim than a slightly pricier policy with better terms.

What happens if my car insurance company goes bust?

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) protects policyholders if an FCA-authorised insurer becomes insolvent. You would receive 100% of any valid claim, with no upper limit for compulsory insurance like motor cover.

Is Admiral or Direct Line better?

Admiral has a larger market share and higher Trustpilot ratings (4.5 vs 4.2), while Direct Line Group offers more brand options (Direct Line, Churchill, Darwin, Privilege). The best choice depends on your quote, and both are now available through SimplyQuote’s comparison tool.
