What Do You Need To Get A Family Fleet Quote?
We’ll need the following information from you before we can provide you with a family fleet car insurance quote:
- Personal details – name, surname, address
- Family details – named drivers, UK/EU licence details, ages
- Vehicle details – number of vehicles needing cover, size, make, model, registration details
Note: Some insurance providers may stipulate a minimum age, such as 21 or 25 years old.
Why Do You Need Family Fleet Insurance?
If you want to save money on your family’s motor car insurance policies, you need family fleet car insurance!
It’s not uncommon for families nowadays to own multiple vehicles, especially when family members still live at the same address.
A family fleet policy is ideal because you can insure all your vehicles under one policy with one renewal date. It eliminates the stress and hassle of having to insure each vehicle individually and trying to remember their respective renewal dates.
Basically, if your family owns two or three vehicles you are eligible for family car insurance. (And no, you don’t need to be a registered business with a fleet of commercial vehicles!)
Family fleet insurance is also referred to as:
- Multi-car insurance
- Multi-vehicle insurance
- Home fleet insurance
How many vehicles can you have on one multi-car insurance policy?
Different insurance providers may have different minimum and maximum limits for the number of vehicles on one policy. Generally, any family who owns two or more cars can get fleet policies.
Some insurers may only insure three to five vehicles – also known as “mini fleet family insurance” – while others could cover up to 20 vehicles.

Get QuotesWhat Does Family Fleet Insurance Cover?
Family fleet insurance covers as many vehicles as you own and policies can be tailored to suit your specific needs. A home fleet insurance policy generally covers:
- Families that own more than two vehicles
- Couple living together and own several motorcars between them
- Couples who each own a vehicle but live separately
- Families with adult children (even if they are currently away at university)
What’s covered
- Accidental damages
- Third-party claims
- Breakdown assistance
What’s not covered
- Normal wear and tear on domestic vehicles
- Claims made when driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Not obeying traffic laws (e.g. reckless driving)
- Deliberate damage to the vehicles – such as vandalism by the owner
- Costs incurred due to negligence (e.g. leaving the car unlocked and it’s stolen)
- Unnamed/uninsured drivers
What kind of vehicles does family fleet insurance cover?
Any family vehicle used for personal use will be covered under a family fleet insurance policy. Another great benefit of having this car insurance is that the insured cars don’t need to be the same make and model.
Other vehicles covered in the insurance plan include:
- Motorcycles
- Scooters
- Campervans
- Horseboxes
What Levels Of Family Fleet Insurance Can You Get?
There are three levels of family fleet insurance you can choose from:
Third-party only (TPO)
TPO is the most affordable level of cover and is also legally required to drive on UK roads. It provides protection and cover if you injure a person or damage their car, but won’t pay if you cause damage to your own vehicle or receive injuries from an accident that was your fault.
Third-party, fire and theft (TPFT)
Third-party fire and theft provides the same protection as TPO, but you’re also protected in the event your car is stolen or damaged in a fire. Again, this level does not include personal injury cover or vehicle repair costs.
Fully comprehensive
Fully comp offers the widest level of protection and is typically the most expensive. This covers damage to your own vehicle(s), even if the accident was your fault. In addition, you’ll be covered for any injuries you or others sustain from the accident. Many comprehensive cover premiums include courtesy car and breakdown cover, but this isn’t always the case.
What Add-Ons Are Available For Family Car Insurance?
There are several optional extras you can add to your multi-car insurance policy that may not already be included in a comprehensive plan:
- Breakdown cover – should personal family vehicles break down and roadside assistance or towing services are needed.
- Classic car cover – some insurers may include cover for classic cars.
- Legal cover – to cover legal expenses should you take someone to court because of an accident (and vice versa).
- EU cover – if you or a family member frequently travels across the UK border.
- Any driver cover – allowing anyone (with a valid licence) to drive your family vehicles.
- Personal accident cover – additional protection to cover personal medical expenses or belongings.
- Windscreen cover – compensates to repair or replace damaged/broken windscreens.
- Young driver cover – in the event younger drivers (e.g. 18 years old) use your vehicles and are below the insurance age limit of 21 or 25.
How Much Does Family Fleet Insurance Cost?
You can get multi-car cover for as little as £27 per vehicle per month. Pricing does vary depending on your chosen insurance provider, the types of vehicles driven and your previous claims history.
How are family fleet insurance policies calculated?
- Drivers’ age and experience
- Vehicle type and condition
- Number of vehicles on the policy
- Annual mileage
- Level of cover chosen
- Optional extras you wish to add
- Security features (i.e. how secure your vehicles are when not in use)
- Claims history

Frequently Asked Questions
Family fleet, or multi-car insurance is a type of domestic vehicle insurance designed to cover a fleet of personal family use vehicles. If you and your family own more than one car, it covers all the vehicles under one policy, with one premium and renewal date.
Generally speaking, multi-car insurance is cheaper than regular car insurance as it bundles multiple vehicles under one policy as opposed to individually. This can save you money in the long run.
No, you do not need to be family members to get a family fleet insurance policy. The main objective of this type of insurance cover is to cover multiple vehicles from the same address. This can transcend to house shares, where residents are not related but live together.
